CHAPTER 7

Daniel not only felt the warmth of the beast’s breath, but the stench of its breath overwhelmed him. However, he gathered all of his courage and pushed his way through the opening. Brian reached for Daniel’s left foot not so much to save his life but so as not to remain behind in the tunnel with a troll lurking so close. The troll had Brian’s scent. It would only be a matter of time before it came for him, once it killed and ate Daniel. Brian kept still and listened. He tried to determine whether Daniel was still alive. He heard no clash of metal cleaving muscle and sinew into bone, nor did he hear any bone shattering from the massive fists of the troll. The silence could only mean one thing—Daniel was dead. Brian panicked. He would be next. The troll would smash his huge, club-like hands through the floorboards and snatch Brian up by his neck. He had to escape. He had to figure out where to go. He could go back to his cottage, but their pursuers might still be prowling.

Capture was a better alternative than what waited for him with the troll. Brian bent down and turned to head back when the false floor flew open and two large, strong hands gripped him by his shoulders, squeezed, and pulled him up through the floor. As Brian opened his mouth to let out a cry for help, a hand wrapped around his mouth, thus stifling a scream for assistance.

Brian fought as best he could. He flailed his arms and legs wildly in an attempt to free himself from the most horrid of deaths. The image of a troll gnawing on him as if he were a chicken nauseated him. A thump of a huge foot and a growl from beneath his flailing foot caused Brian to resign himself to his fate. However, he would not die face down in a puddle of his own vomit after another night of drunken debauchery. No, Brian would prove his wife wrong. He would die slowly as the troll ripped him apart and ate him piece by piece, limb by limb.

I’d rather lose another argument, Brian thought.

Brian slowly opened one eye and then the other. The barn was dark and damp. He could barely make out the shape of the walls. At least the monster had the courtesy to face Brian away so he could not witness himself being ripped apart and eaten. The beast slowly turned Brian around and released the iron grip on his shoulders. Brian dropped to the floor and realized that Daniel had grabbed him, not a monster. The knight’s horse and dog were standing on either side of him, and Brian swore to himself that the dog smiled in amusement.

Brian still trembled when Daniel spoke. “My friend, it’s okay. All friends here, no trolls or monsters. You have a wild imagination, Brian.”

“Yeah, well, you never came face to face with a troll before. Have you, oh brave knight?”

“Calm yourself, my friend.
